Activity 4a

After playing with the Problem of Regular Hexagon applet, answer your question below and post it on the discussion board. If you find you are still having troubles getting the idea after playing with the applet or you just want to test your answers to see if they are correct, you will want to try out my new Flash Octagon program.

For the problems below we will use the same concepts as we did above except this time we are using a regular octagon. It is still helpful to play with the applet to get the idea.

Vector a=AB, vector b=AH,and vector c=HG.
Vector -a=BA, vector -b=HA, and vector -c=GH.

Note that vector BC is clearly a multiple of a+c. We need to calculate that multiple in order to do most of the problems below. In otherwords we need to evaluate k in BC=k(a + c). Similarly, vector c can be written in terms of vectors a and b.

The first person to calculate k exactly and post it on the discussion board will get 3 extra points since this will help almost everyone else with this assignment. Also the first person to write the vector equation for c exactly will earn 3 extra credit points. Please make sure you show your work or explain how you got your answer since you could get these values by trial and error using my new Flash program. If someone has posted an answer that you disagree with please feel free to post your own answer. You are welcome to attach any images you made to help you explain it. You can make images in Word (using the built in drawing program) or in a drawing program. You can assume that each side in the regular octogon has length one since they are all the same.
