First week sample essay

Done___

Step 1: Write a sample essay

I would like you to write a multi-paragraphed essay of at least 500 words responding to the following prompt:

Tell me about your last writing/English class, whether in college or high school.

  • What did you learn about writing?
  • What types of writing did you do?
  • What did you like about the class?
  • What did you not like about the class?

The purpose for this sample is to give me some idea of what your writing is like and so I can also give you some suggestions if you need help beyond our class. And to practice using the drop box--see the next step.

  • Plan to complete this essay in about 60 minutes.

Step 2: Proofread and spell check your sample essay

I will give you feedback about some aspects of writing evaluation that are used by the Writing Program.

  • Also, please double space the paper and in the left hand corner put your name, my name, the class title and the date.
Note: you are required to use a full-featured word processor for this class, such as Microsoft Word (not Works) or WordPerfect. It is possible to complete some assignments, like writing exercises, with smaller word processors, such as WordPad or Microsoft Works. But you must use and be relatively proficient with using a full-featured word processor.

If you do not have a full featured word processor, you need to get one right away. As I noted in the syllabus, you can get a free full-featured word processor, OpenOffice at http://www.openoffice.org/ . If you are not familiar with downloading and installing software, especially zipped files, I suggest you find someone to help you install it.

And I suggest you come see me if you have difficulty with formatting.

After you've completed the essay in your word processor, save it as a rich text format (RTF) file and send it through the Angel writing sample drop box--just click on Pages & Workspaces>Week 1>writing sample drop box.

  • If you don't know how to save as rich text format, click on the preceding link.
