Writ 121 Spring 2004 Submission of Portfolios

Our group number is 13.

On Thursday 22 April 2004, you will be submitting your portfolios. We will meet in computer classroom within the following time:

10:10 a.m.-12 noon--OC 217

(click on the room numbers for directions)

  • If you cannot make these hours, let me know, and we'll make further arrangements for you to write the reflective essay and turn in the portfolio at the Assessment Center. However, it cannot be at a later date or time.

Please follow the directions below:

Essays required

  • Three revised essays that reflect your best work
    • Each essay has to have been based on one of the essays I responded to and returned through the drop box during the semester.
      • The revised, final draft can be quite different: much narrower in focus, more fully developed, more effectively arranged. But it cannot be on a completely different topic.
    • At least one essay must use external sources with MLA parenthetic citation and a works cited page.
      • Do note, though, that any essay that quotes, summarizes or paraphrases from another source--including Common Culture or Working Writer--must use MLA parenthetic citation and a works cited page. And you were required to do so for all essays except essay 1.
  • An in-person essay, to be written with MS Word when we meet.
Note that if any of these items are missing, I will not be able to forward your portfolio to the external readers, and it will automatically fail.

Format for Final Essays

  • As we've been doing all semester, these essays are to be word-processed using MLA style, WW 427-28, with examples in Handouts/examples>Samples from Dan
  • However, now you will turn in paper copies instead of electronic versions.
    • (In addition, though, make sure to upload an electronic version through the Digital Drop Box, just as a safeguard.)
  • Staple each essay in the upper left corner.
Note carefully the variations that we need to follow for the final essays that the external readers will be evaluating.
  • Identify yourself at the top left margin of the first page for each essay with your student number, group number, and the date:
    • Student #123456789 (your SSI or @#)
    • Group # 13
    • WRIT 121
    • 22 April 2004
  • Do not write your name or my name on the final drafts or anywhere within the in-person reflective essay.
  • For page numbers, instead of placing your last name and the page number in the header of the document--to the right and one-half inch from the top margin--put your student number and the page number, like this:
  • Student #123456789 2
  • I know, it looks goofy. But it will help to identify each page should the page become misplaced.
  • Staple each essay in the upper left corner.

Materials for Submission

  • Two folders with inside pockets. (Please, do not use binders, accordion files, plastic essay holders--just cheap folders with inside pockets.)
    • One folder will have
  • paper copies of your early drafts, including both drafts I have seen with your reflection and my response, and any handwritten or interim drafts that I haven't seen,
  • prewriting--both handwritten (if any) and word processed--including any prewriting I haven't seen,
  • audience responses--from no fewer than three class members for each essay, besides me--including names of respondents and dates when you received them, and
  • sources--copies of print and electronic sources--except for CC and WW--or any Web articles I've supplied.
  • In other words, you are to include every bit of writing you've done or used in preparing the final draft of your essays.
  • And again, it all has to be there to get credit for the portfolio.
  • Put your name and student number on the outside of this first folder.
    • The second folder will include your final, revised drafts and your in-person essay.
      • Do not put your name on the outside of this second folder.
      • Instead, put your student  and group numbers. (I will have labels when we meet, so you can wait until then to do this.)

Grading

  • Your portfolio--the final, revised essays--will be graded holistically, based on the Writing Standards, by external readers, both other WRIT 121  instructors.
    • They will indicate if it is Pass (2.0 or above) or No Pass
  • Your portfolio must receive a Pass by both external readers for you to receive a 2.0 or higher in the course. In case of a difference (one pass, one no pass), your portfolio will be read by a third instructor.
    • If the portfolio passes, I will read and grade the portfolio and then factor in the portfolio grade (70%) along with your online activity letters/writing exercises (10%) and your essay process work (20%) to determine your final grade.
    • If the portfolio doesn't pass, again, I will read and grade it and factor in the portfolio grade (70%) along with your online activity letters/writing exercises (10%) and your essay process work (20%) to determine your final grade.
    • However, you will not be able to earn any higher than a 1.5 for the course.

There will be no work due during the period the external readers are evaluating your portfolio. Cool, huh?

  • We will meet the last day of class, 6 May  2004, Thursday, at 10:10 a.m. when I will return to you your portfolio, my response and evaluation of the portfolio, and your grade for the course. I'm not which room we'll be meeting in yet. I will email you when I know for sure.
  • Happy revising!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call me or e-mail me. My phone number and office hours are right above the Table of Contents on the Online Syllabus. I do have voice mail for my phone if I'm not in.
