Many changes were made to the LCC Board of Trustees during its meeting on Jan. 25, including swearing in two new members and electing a new chair.

Reelected Trustee Andrew Abood, along with newly elected Trustee LaShunda Thomas, were sworn in at the beginning of the meeting.

After the swearing-in ceremony, the board unanimously elected new officers, including Ryan Buck as the new chair. He replaces Lawrence Hidalgo as chair, though Hidalgo remains on the board.

“Well, it’s an honor and a privilege,” Buck said of his appointment. “I see the position as chair as serving (the board’s) interests, seeing that their interests and goals are met (and) that the college is governed well. But also as chair it is important for us to be aware of what our role is with the college.

“It’s very important that we know our role and we stick to that role. We’re very fortunate at the college not to have had much conflict or disruption amongst our board members. We’re a good crew, but that has not always been the case at LCC, or even at other community colleges, so maintaining that unity of purpose is one of my primary goals.”

Buck spoke about his plans and priorities as chair.

“Right now, it’s seeing our equity action plan, and our resolute addressing injustice through equity, inclusion and diversity, and seeing that become embedded in our LCC culture,” Buck said.

Buck also commented on navigating through COVID-19.

“We (the Board of Trustees) also have to continue being a leader in navigating the pandemic … and really being a leader in higher education,” Buck said. “We want to see that continue to be the case so that we’re serving our students in the best way that we can.

“It’s not just about student access anymore; it’s about student success. Both of those components are vital, and the pandemic has made it a much larger challenge for us to achieve success together.”

In addition to Buck’s appointment, Trustee Angela Mathews was elected as Vice Chair of the board.

The next board meeting will be on Monday, Feb.15 via WebEx at 6 p.m.
