Japanese Club welcomes new members
By Julie Newell
The Japanese Club held its first meeting of the semester Monday, Oct. 26, via WebEx.
This was a meet-and-greet event during which the club invited students to join.
“The purpose of this club is to create a space where people can learn more about the Japanese culture and language,” Club President Eva Hudson said.
The club had several activities during this event. This including each person introducing themselves in Japanese, a PowerPoint about the club, and a few videos about Halloween in Japan.
Club adviser Mieko Philips, showed a PowerPoint presentation about the club and its activities before COVID-19. The club hosted many events, including: origami folding; playing Japanese chess and Chinese checkers; field trips to restaurants and the Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids; fundraisers; and a presentation in the StarScapes event at LCC.
Hudson commented on future activities the club is planning.
“In the short term, we are planning to play games and learn about some Japanese food on Monday, Nov. 2,” Hudson said. “In the long term, we are researching and planning fundraisers to fund many field trips once the pandemic is over.”
Anyone can attend the club meetings, which are scheduled via WebEx on Mondays from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
