The Wharton Center at Michigan State University is holding an event called “whARTon at home” on its YouTube channel Friday, May 29 at 6:30 p.m.
The event will be hosted by Broadway star Paul Canaan. Canaan has been in multiple Broadway shows, including “Legally Blonde,” “Miss Saigon” and “Kinky Boots.” It can be streamed on the Wharton Center’s YouTube channel or at www.whartoncenter.com.
“Wharton Center is like my second home. I love visiting each summer,” Canaan said. “While I may not be able to be there in person, I am excited to connect with the Wharton audience and students to bring this exciting virtual Broadway evening to Michigan.”
Other Broadway names will join Canaan. They include Courtney Reed, who originated the role of Princess Jasmine in Disney’s “Aladdin”; Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell; current Wharton Center “Take It from the Top” students; and more.
The event will include performances and interviews from artists who are set to perform in shows during The Wharton Center’s 2020-21 season, according to Bob Hoffman, manager of Wharton Center public relations.
“Paul Canaan is bringing a bunch of his Broadway friends and they’re all incredibly talented people,” Hoffman said. “It’s going to be engaging, it’s going to be educational, it’s going to be a lot of fun.
“We’ve got representation from ‘Mean Girls,’ from ‘Frozen,’ from ‘Pretty Woman.’ … It really highlights the fact that Wharton Center continually draws top talent to our region.”
Hoffman continued: “People are staying home more because of COVID and so it’s a fun Friday night. What better way to spend a Friday night (than) with some of the most talented people in the world.”
