LCC’s VEX Robotics club was founded two years ago by current Club President Julia Stouffer.

“(The club) aims to create a medium through which students can apply their creativity in a hands-on manner,” she said.

Stouffer founded the club in the spring of 2018 and has been the club president ever since.

She said the club was started as a way to allow students who were active with VEX Robotics in high school to continue their experience at the community college level before transferring to a four-year university.

“Not many community colleges fund VEX Robotics teams or know about them, but universities with engineering programs do,” Stouffer said.

In the past, the club has participated in LCC’s Welcome Week at the beginning of the fall semester, as well as RSO, Valentine’s Day and Halloween fairs.

Before the start of the pandemic, the club also held regular club meetings, during which members would listen to music while building and coding their robots.

It also participated in the STEAM Fest last semester and competed in a competition at Monroe County Community College on Feb. 1.

Stouffer said her favorite memory from the past year with the club was competing in its first competition.

“It had been three years since I participated in a competition and I’m glad the other members got to learn how fun it was, and that building and programming isn’t everything the club is about,” she said. “Seeing the end goal of going to competitions adds to the appeal of club activities.”

One of the achievements Stouffer said she is most proud of is, after two years of funding the club to buy parts, it has gained the equipment needed to participate in competitions.

“I’m proud of securing the future of the club and going to our first competition ever,” she said.

Stouffer said she plans to stay in the club until she graduates from LCC, either at the end of the summer or a later date.
