Skynyrd, Toby Keith coming to Jackson

The Jackson County Fair is scheduled to host three large music acts this summer: Toby Keith, MercyMe and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The fair runs Aug. 9 to 15.
Country star Keith, whose hits include “How Do You Like Me Now?,” and “Who’s Your Daddy?” will perform Sunday, Aug. 9 at 7 p.m.
Legendary rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd (“Free Bird,” “Gimme Three Steps”) will play Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m.
Tickets for those shows are currently available online at www.jacksoncountyfair.net.
Contemporary Christian band MercyMe will perform Monday, Aug. 10, at 7 p.m. Tickets for that show go on sale April 10 at 8 a.m.
Jackson County Fair Director Denise Owens said it is not unusual for her fair to draw such famous acts.
“The Jackson County Fair is 167 years old and we have a long, rich history of top-name entertainers that have come into Jackson and played at the fair,” Owens said.
Fair officials work with promoter Meridian Entertainment. They began the search for acts last October during a conference in Nashville.
“We start the review process of ‘who’s touring,’ ‘cost,’ and ‘availability,’” Owens said. “Once we put a short list together of genres, we then look at the numbers that the entertainer garners … we look at our promoter to help us make a fit with what is available.
“Budget is a tough one in today’s world. The industry used to rely on record sales … now it has moved (to) touring, so cost can be significant. You have to make sure that the numbers support your choice.”
The cost of concert tickets range widely.
Toby Keith ticket prices start at $37 and rise to $105. Lynyrd Skynyrd ticket prices range from $41 to $104.
“Having concerts at a fair offers more than just the show,” Owens said. “(People can also enjoy) the agricultural displays, free acts, carnival and, of course, the fair food.”
The Jackson County Fairgrounds are located about 35 minutes south of Lansing, at 104 W. Ganson St. in Jackson.
