President Trump ‘discovers’ Muslims
By Haneen Hammad
President Donald Trump has gone international in the last couple of days. He has visited Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Israel and Iran.
During his time in Saudi Arabia, Trump gave an unexpected speech about Muslims. He used warm words to describe Muslims, which is something we have never heard before.
You have to hand it to President Trump. To have gone from his anti-Muslim rhetoric for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States,” to “terrorists do not worship God, they worship death,” is an achievement for a man who has only been known to bash Islam.
And, of course, he discovered that “more than 95 percent of the victims of terrorism are themselves Muslim” just in time for his visit to “Islam’s holiest sites in one of the world’s great faiths.”
Now, I would love to believe that Trump’s speech was sincere, and that he really meant those words about Muslims. But we all know Trump’s background in business.
He is a salesman. Trump understands that in order to sell an arms deal that is worth $110 billion to Saudi Arabia, he will need to tell the audience what the audience wants to hear.
Trump is treating the Saudi Arabian people like any other business partners he has had in the past.
I don’t believe there has been any turnaround. I don’t think Trump has experienced an “awakening.”
