Lions and tigers and goats, oh my!

The LCC Alumni Association will hold the 12th annual “Day at the Zoo” event Sunday, June 26 at Potter Park in Lansing.

The event is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. Admission to the zoo is free for alumni, students, staff and faculty members and their families during the scheduled times.

Andrew Lathrop, manager of Alumni Relations at LCC, has been in charge of organizing the event since 2008. He shared some basic information about the event.

“Everyone who comes gets in free and there is 15 percent off at the gift shop,” Lathrop said. “There is free face painting, which is done by American Marketing Association students and other student clubs.

“There is a free family photo booth, which is just one of those stand-alone things that people put costumes on and they can take funny pictures in. We also have free caricatures. We have three different artists come out (to sketch caricatures).”

Lathrop offered some indication of the popularity of this event.

“We get about 2,000 people each year,” he said. “I’m pretty sure it’s the second largest college event; the first is commencements.”

Renee VanDeventer, office manager for Student Life at LCC, has attended the Alumni Association’s Day at the Zoo in the past.

“I went with my nephews,” VanDeventer said. “They really enjoyed the entire experience and I did as well. It’s fun to get your family involved in an event like this.”

Lathrop agreed.

“The event is great,” he said. “To be able to offer something to alumni is always a good thing, and when we’re able to offer it to their whole families it just makes it more enjoyable.

“The average group size that attends is four people,” he said. “About 60 percent of actual attendees are kids, so it’s really cool to see all the families and meet a big group of alumni at once as they pile into the zoo.”

Lathrop said the exclusive sponsor for the Alumni Association Day at the Zoo is LAFCU (Lansing Automakers Federal Credit Union).
