LCC has performed an annual spring dance concert since the early 1970s, according to D’onna Jacot, a beginning and intermediate tap instructor.
Jacot has worked at LCC since 1978.
Vickie Diebold is the director of American Spirit, dance faculty member at LCC and the head of LCC’s dance department.
Diebold has developed this year’s theme for the concert, a duty she has performed for the past four years.
This year’s theme takes audience members through different aspects of what it means to be an American citizen.
“Back in September when I was thinking about a theme, there was a lot of media coverage on 9/11,” Diebold said. “I wanted to do a piece on what it meant to be an American. I feel like sometimes we get so caught up with all the negativity in the news that we forget about all the positive aspects of this country.”
Auditions for American Spirit were held Jan. 14-15. Successful auditionees must register for a dance repertory and techniques class, as well as meet for various rehearsal times with their choreographer before the concert.
This year’s concert has a diverse range of dancers including LCC students, high school students, alumni and a dancer in her 60s.
“Last year’s concert was fantastic,” Diebold said. “This year’s concert is heavier, but I’m excited to see how everything goes.”
American Spirit will be held in Dart Auditorium Thursday, April 5 and 6 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, April 7 at 2 p.m.
Diebold said she hopes attendees will leave American Spirit feeling prideful about being an American.
