Music, in its own unique way, leaves a mark on people. One of those specially marked people is LCC alumnus and saxophonist Phil Denny. Denny first found this love for music in the summer of 1992 at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.

“It was during my session there that I know music would be a constant in my life,” Denny said. Prior to this revelation, Denny hadn’t really experienced the power of music.

“Music found me,” Denny said. “Music was not in my household growing up. Now, I feel that music is my second language. It’s a form of communication and a way for me to reach people and draw out an emotion. The connection with the listener is what I love.”

Music was not the only thing Denny found. In his sixth grade music class, Denny’s teacher helped him decide which instrument to choose. The teacher helped him by explaining “you look like a sax player.”

After picking up the instrument, Denny claimed “It molded to my fingers.” Even though the saxophone fit perfectly into his hands, Denny said he didn’t know he would pursue music as a career.

It wasn’t until attending LCC his senior year of high school did he consider the music program.

His freshman year at LCC was the first time he considered music as a career.

“(At LCC as a freshman) I was uncertain as to whether or not I would pursue music as a major,” Denny said. “LCC provided me an opportunity to explore my career options while learning a fundamental and transferable curriculum.”

Denny’s love of music not only surpassed the walls of LCC, but it has also reached places like Alaska, Nevada and New York.

Denny’s music is in the process of becoming accessible through his first full-length CD. His CD titled Crossover will be released in the spring of 2012. More information on Phil Denny and his music can be gathered at philonsax.com.
